Ingarnendi • Material Culture of Aboriginal Australia

• Promotes itself as the most comprehensive Aboriginal cultural exhibition in the world, with over 3,000 objects and hundreds of photographs on display in a contemporary and ethnographic setting.

The exhibition differs from most other contemporary exhibitions of Aboriginal culture by highlighting the achievements of Australian Aboriginal people before their material culture and traditions were significantly affected by European contact.

Tandanya
• Tandanya is a unique place to explore and experience contemporary and traditional Aboriginal cultural expression, through the performing and visual arts. Tandanya exhibits the work of emerging and established Indigenous artists. Tandanya is the Kaurna Aboriginal name for the Adelaide city area and was for many, many thousands of years, a place for special ceremonies connected with Red Kangaroo Dreaming. Adelaide is built on Kaurna (pronounced Garn-na) land. Our curator searches for the best quality exhibitions from all over Australia and for works that best reflect the diversity of culture and art within Indigenous communities.

• They open a door of understanding to this ancient culture by sharing their stories and spirits, depicting the Dreamtime, the animals, traditional hunting and food gathering. Performances are in the traditional and authentic manner of the old corroboree and in a majestic natural setting.

Norman B Tindale • South Australian Museum

• Norman Barnett Tindale’s career encompassed a number of research paths across several decades. It was on his first field trip that Tindale developed a project towards the concept of bounded tribal territories. His tribal map of Australia (Tribal Boundaries), first published in 1940 and revised in 1974 together with his encyclopaedia of Aboriginal tribal groups, was radical in its fundamental implication that Australia was not terra nullius. A fascinating account of a unique Australian.
