Canberra is surrounded by the artificial Lake Burley Griffin. On the
northern side of the lake (Civic), are the businesses, shops,
university and suburbs including Reid, Braddon, Turner and Acton.
To
the south of the lake are the Parliamentary and administrative
buildings, surrounded by suburbs that include Barton, Deakin,
Forrest, Parkes, and Yarralumla. Canberra is also surrounded by the
satellite towns of Belconnen, Tuggeranong and Woden.
There are two
islands in Lake Burley Griffin, Springbank Island
and Spinnaker Island.
East of the
city (7 km) is Canberras airport. Most interstate buses arrive at
the Jolimont Centre in Civic. Located on the south side of the lake
in Kingston is the railway station. Many shops and restaurants are
located in Civic and Manuka, with a few cafes throughout the inner
suburbs. Civic is the centre of Canberras nightlife.
