National and Local Events - Australia
Want to see what is happening where you are going? Maybe you want to include a destination in your plans, some stopover to coincide with events happening in that town?

Some events happen across state and territory borders, some of which are listed here. Other state/territory events can be found listed within the ‘Events’ section for each state and territory. For more information, check the destination pages of the town or area you are visiting.

Some events happen at the same time throughout Australia, such as Christmas and New Years Eve celebrations, ANZAC Day, Australia Day, local markets, agricultural shows etc. Some scheduled events only have approximate dates, with some dates changing or being cancelled.

When planning your travel around events, contact the holder of the event or the local visitor centre where the event is happening to confirm the event timetable.

  Australian Safari
• August - September
Frequently referred to as Australia’s version of the ‘Paris to Dakar’, the Australian Safari is established as one of the iconic Australian events and is Australia’s longest running off-road rally.

Started in 1985 with a starting field of 312 competitors, the original 7 day event from Sydney to Darwin was called the Wynn’s Safari. The event continued to run from Sydney to Darwin until 1994.

In 1995 to 1996 the event ran from Adelaide to Townsville. 1997 saw the event run from Cairns to Ayers Rock and finish at the Gold Coast. There was no race in 1998. From 1999 to 2001 the even ran from Alice Springs to Darwin. In 2002 to 2004 the event moved to New South Wales incorporating the famous Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst. After a 2 year spell, it celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2007 in Western Australia, with the race traversing over 5,000 km of gruelling outback terrain starting in Kununurra and finishing in Perth. For the first time in its history, the event included two components - the competitive component plus an inaugural non-competitive component - The Adventure Tour.
