Welcome to the Australian Inland
Botanic Gardens, near Mildura, in the heart of the Murray-Mallee Outback. This
152 hectare site grew out of a former grazing lease on the NSW side of the
Murray River just downstream from Mildura at Morquong, about 20 km upstream from
its confluence with Australias other great river, the Darling and is unique
among Australian botanic gardens in displaying plants from around the world by
their continent, country or region of origin.
The establishment of the Gardens is a long term project. Since 1988, more than
20,000 plants have been planted in Stage 1 - a 48 hectare development in former
mallee-chenopod (saltbush) woodland, features species from the floras of Africa,
Europe, Asia, North and South America, New Zealand and Australia.
A large rose garden and a rock garden are among the Gardens features. Some of
the geographic gardens are now well established, and work has begun on an
ornamental lake and a network of ornamental streams. See website for each stage

George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens

Located about 2 km north of the
Darwin Business District, the Gardens was established over 130 years ago to
introduce and evaluate plants for food and flavour to a small developing
community and has since become important in the recreational and scientific life
of the city.
Having survived numerous cyclones and the direct effects of World War II, the
site extends inland from the sea to a plateau providing a range of planting
environments and is one of a few botanic gardens in the world which has marine
and estuarine plants naturally in its grounds. The gardens spread across 42
hectares showcase the flora of Northern Australia and other tropical habitats
around the world. You can wander through rainforest, coastal foredunes,
mangroves and open woodlands, see orchids, aroids, bromeliads and other striking
foliage plants up close. There are over 400 palm species alone growing in the
gardens. There is also a self guided Aboriginal Plant Use walk. The location of
the gardens is within the Fannie Bay cultural and recreational precinct and
places it amongst primary tourist venues.

An Arid Zone Botanic Garden in the Northern Territory. Miss Olive Pink arrived
in Central Australia in 1930, and lived with the Aboriginal people in the Tanami
Desert. She studied the Arrernte and Walpiri people and was a great advocate of
Aboriginal rights. Later she lived in Alice Springs and worked for the creation
of this arid zone botanic garden.

South Australias most
visited attraction, the Adelaide Botanic Garden is home to the
internationally acclaimed Bicentennial Conservatory. The largest
single span conservatory in the southern hemisphere and one of
the largest in the world, it features plants from the tropical
rainforests of northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia
and the nearby Pacific
Islands.
Many of these plants are at risk in their natural habitats.
Built to celebrate Australias Bicentenary in 1988, the
Conservatory enables visitors to experience a unique and
visually stunning rainforest environment right here in the heart
of Adelaide.
The gardens on North Terrace were founded in 1855 and opened in
1857. It features a glorious Victorian gardenesque landscape,
including avenues of mature trees particularly Araucaria and
figs and important garden buildings, i.e. Museum of Economic
Botany, Palm House and Victoria House, and statuary.

In Piccadilly feature
displays of cool temperate plants from both hemispheres brought
together in a dramatic landscape setting on the eastern face of
Mount Lofty. Spring and autumn are both colourful seasons,
however Fern Gully, Woodland Gardens, Bog Gardens and the
tranquil lake system make any time of year worth a visit.
Several walking trails take visitors through the seven valleys
each dedicated to a particular plant group including stunning
displays of magnolias, rhododendrons, camellias, roses and
peonies. |
