The plovers and dotterels are a group of wading birds that belong to the subfamily Charadriinae and together with the lapwings, belong to the larger family Charadriidae.

Found through the world, most live in open country regions, usually in habitats that are near water. The exception to this is the Inland Dotterel, that are found in stony ground habitat of the arid regions of Central and Western Australia.
