The order
Orthoptera — which means ‘straight wings’ — encompass a group of insects
commonly known as grasshoppers, crickets, katydids and locusts. It is thought
that Australia has approximately 3,000 species of orthopterans, with some
measuring up to 12 cm in body length.
One of the abilities of this group of insect is their ability to produce
sounds by rubbing together certain parts of their body, known as ‘stridulation’.
It is usually the males that produce the sound to attract females, although in
some species the female can also produce sound. |
