Dolphins • Order Delphinidae, Platanistidae
With some 33 different species of dolphins around the world, dolphins have always been popular with adults and children alike. There was even a famous dolphin as the star of a TV series, with dolphins also featuring in a number of animation.

Captive dolphins in Australia are less common these days, with visitors preferring to see them in the wild. Dolphins can still be seen in captivity, such as the successful breeding program in the Dolphin Nursery Pool at Sea World in Queensland.

Dolphins can sometimes be seen enjoying the bow waves of boats and ferries such as Sydney Harbour (travelling between Sydney and Manly), Bass Strait (travelling between Melbourne and Devonport), and the Backstairs Passage (travelling between Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island).

Some whale watching tours may also offer the opportunity to catch sight of dolphins, whilst there are also dedicated dolphin sight-seeing tours such as found in Hervey Bay, Queensland. The most well known close encounter with dolphins are those found at Monkey Mia in Western Australia.

We will be bringing for you here more information about dolphins. We always welcome contributions and images. If you have seen dolphins any where in Australia, email us  details, including the date, the species, the number of dolphins and the exact location.
