Mammal • Class Mammalia
The word marsupial is derived from marsupium, the pouch from which the female of the species carry and rears the young in their early infancy. Most marsupial species are found in Australia and New Zealand. Marsupials can also be found in South America with one species, the Virginia Opossum, found in some parts of North America. The most well known of the Australian marsupials include the koala, kangaroo, wombat and the Tasmania Devil. Others will also be familiar with the possum, numbat, bandicoot, ningauis, sugar gliders, quokka, and the Tasmanian Tiger (the Thylacine).
