Leucospermum • Family Proteaceae
Leucospermum, also commonly called Pincushion or Pincushion Protea is a genus of about 50 species of evergreen, flowering plants in the family Proteaceae.

A native plant to Zimbabwe and South Africa, they are found growing in a variety of habitats that include scrubland, forest, and mountain slopes.

An evergreen, they are found growing from half a metre up to 5 metres high, depending on the species.

The flowers are usually produced in dense inflorescences, which have large numbers of prominent styles, hence the reference to ‘pincushion’.

Belonging to the same family as the Australian Waratah, the genus is closely related in evolution and appearance to the Australian genus Banksia and are found often growing in botanical gardens and home gardens.
