Solanaceae
The Solanaceae family is noted for including a number of edible plants such as the potato, tomato, capsicum, capsicum, chilli and egg-plant. There are about 90 genera and more than 2,600 species, mainly found in temperate and tropical regions. Australia has approximately 23 genera and about 200 species, the largest and best known genus being Solanum (about 100 species).

Whilst some species have edible parts of the plant, there are others which are poisonous (with some having both edible and toxic parts).

Of the Solanum species in Australia, the most well known one are the ‘bush tomato’, which is now being used as a cultivated plant.
