Scientific Classification / Name
The AusEmade flora and fauna section aims to provide information and images of plants and animals that may be found in Australia. Although we endeavour to provided the full scientific name, along with the common name and some commentary, we do not pretend to be a scientific document. There are many resources both printed and online that we hope will further the pleasure for those seeking more information and where known, we will include some information and links to these resources.

All information provided is for your enjoyment only and may not be accurate enough for scientific or academic purposes. Although we try to ensure that information provided is correct, if you do find any error, please let us know.
 

The science of classifying all organisms is called ‘taxonomy’. Each living organism is classified according to its:
  • Kingdom
  • Division / Phylum
  • Class
  • Order
  • Family
  • Genus
  • Species

A species is usually called by the first letter of its genus (capitalised), followed by its species name (in lower case).

Example:
Genus: Balaenoptera
Species: B. musculus
Binomial name: Balaenoptera musculus
Common name: Blue Whale

• A wonderful online resource, with huge amount of information on flora and fauna, entered by people from all walks of life.
Wikispecies - The Free Encyclopedia
• Supported by the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikispecies is a project with aims to becoming an open, free directory of species. This will cover Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Bacteria, Archaea, Protista and all other forms of life to the extent that our users allow us.
World Biodiversity Database (WBD)
• Consists of a number of separate projects, each with its own interface and feature set.
