There are a number of cinema and film festivals held throughout Australia. There are also some smaller film events held as part of a larger festival such as some of the ‘under the stars’ and ‘moonlight’ sessions, like that found as part of the Festival of Sydney.

National - Film Festivals  
Flickerfest (National)
• Australia's premiere international short film festival. Starting early January it tours cities throughout the country and have included Sydney, Byron Bay, Alice Springs, Katherine, Adelaide, Gunnedah, Melbourne, Canberra, Kempsey, Sawtell, Brisbane, Perth, and Broome.

French Film Festival (National) • Alliance Fran็aise
• An cultural association dedicated to promoting French language and culture with festivals held in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. Check website for dates.

WOW International Film Festival
• Held every 2 years in October. The previous one held in 2002 was at Fox Studios, Sydney. After its time in Sydney the festival travelled to the other state capitals and regional Australia through to July 2003.

Tropfest
• Held on a Sunday night in February each year in Sydney.

Byron All Screen’s Celebration
• Use to be held February, but moved to October timeslot.

Sydney Film Festival
• June.

Sydney Asia Pacific Film Festival
• Early August. Launch movies throughout the year, check their website.

WOW International Film Festival
• Held every 2 years in October. The previous one held in 2002 was at Fox Studios, Sydney. After its time in Sydney the festival travelled to the other state capitals and regional Australia through to July 2003.

Northern Territory (NT) - Film Festivals Location
Down Under International Film Festival (Darwin)
• N.T. Filmmakers Association. Late April to early May.

Deckchair Cinema / Darwin Film Society
• Deckchair Cinema, operated by the Darwin Film Society, is unique in many ways. It is fully independent and screens films that are often otherwise unavailable to local audiences.

The outdoor setting, on the edge of Darwin Harbour is absolutely stunning. The lights reflected from anchored and passing ships make for a serene periphery. The wonderful sunsets over the sea every evening are a stunning backdrop for people who come early with their picnic dinners.

Run by the community-based Darwin Film Society, the Deckchair Cinema runs seven nights a week during the dry season screenings a range of movies from family favourites to festivals and foreign films. Screening: Every evening, double features on Friday and Saturday from April to November. Visit the website for program details.

Chinese Film Festival (National)
• December.

Melbourne International Animation Festival
• Late June.

Melbourne International Film Festival

Melbourne Queer Film & Video Festival
• The second largest queer film festival in Australia that includes features, docos, shorts and experimental works from Australia and around the world. Held during March.

They also co-present the Movies Under The Stars (MUTS)
• held during January to early February.

Melbourne Underground Film Festival
• Early July.

St Kilda Film Festival (National)
• The longest running dedicated celebration of short film in Australia. Late May to June.
