Viva Espana

Spain is the holiday destination that has it all – sandy beaches, clear blue skies, delicious food and a wealth of cultural treats waiting to be discovered. The transport is cheap, the people are friendly, and there is enough regional variety to keep even the most cynical traveller on the edge of their seat. From the white-sand beaches of Malaga and the breathtaking mountains above Granada to the sleepy cobbled streets of Tarragona and the majesty of Madrid, the Spanish experience can hardly fail to sweep you off your feet.

Over fifty million foreigners visit Spain every year, and the majority are there in search of sun. If you’re looking for good beaches, an all-over suntan and a lively social life, then your best bet is the Costa Blanca. Encompassing the varied Alicante province, it is one of Spain’s most popular holiday destinations and is served by regular cheap flights from the UK. Head to the city of Alicante itself to experience history rubbing shoulders with a thriving club and restaurant scene, or visit Oliva or Gandia in the north to find some of the costa’s more secluded beaches.

Further south the tourists are fewer and the beaches no less beautiful. The Costa Calida centres around the ancient city of Murcia, and boasts one of Spain’s most beautiful natural lagoons – Mar Menor. If you enjoy combining your beach breaks with leisure pursuits then this is the place to go; the area has a high concentration of professional-quality golf courses, as well as plenty of opportunities for horse riding, hiking, diving and wildlife watching.

The Costa Almeria, Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz also offer beautiful beaches and leisure opportunities for holidaymakers; but a flurry of recent building activity and a growing interest from the package holiday market means you’ll have to search around for a place to put your towel. The coast around Marbella and Malaga in particular can become overcrowded. If it’s seclusion you’re after then try Mara on the Costa del Sol – less easily accessed, but a beautiful area largely overlooked by tourists.

Of course, there’s more to Spain than sun, sand and surf. Its beautiful and diverse cities reflect the country’s eclectic history. In the south, the strong historical Moorish influence has shaped the urban architecture - expect an oriental feel in Granada and the surrounding area, with gems like the famous Alhambra palace providing testament to the wealth and power of the conquering Moors. Further north, oriental architecture gives way to classical ruins and city plans which have more in common with the great western capitals; crumbling Roman remains like the Tarragona amphitheatre are surrounded by winding streets, clustering cafes and stone houses with bright terracotta roofs. The southern sleepiness of Granada and Valencia contrasts with the modern and lively cities of Barcelona and Madrid.

Finally, Spain’s beautiful interior is a perfect stamping ground for those keen to escape the crowds. The verdant northern countryside above Madrid provides plenty of hiking, biking and riding opportunities, while the mountains between Malaga and Granada are unmatched for spectacular views and beautiful photo opportunities. Spain is a country of many faces, and you’re bound to find one which suits you.
