Consumer Affairs and Complaints Resources - Australia

Avenues for complaints in Australia can vary between states and territories, with some having their own consumer affairs, fair trading, civil, tenancy and administrative tribunals. Today, the consumer and complaints category have also coined another term, econsumer.

With the internet, there are now many resources for finding out information about consumer rights. In Australia, the main bodies are government, with most providing information, tips and other resources to helping you resolve any issues.

Government bodies sometimes change, especially when there is a change in local government, with departments and statutory bodies being realigned or merged under new administration. This also sometimes means that website addresses also change. We have endeavoured to list the appropriate government body as your starting point. If the website address has changed, just drop us an email letting us know, so that we can update the details.

For those with complaints against overseas individuals and companies, the process becomes much more difficult, and you may need to do a bit of research to find the appropriate body in the country/region/state where the individual/company is supposed to be located. We list some resources below that may be a useful starting point.

But like everything on the world wide web, ‘buyer beware’. A bit of commonsense and research by you, prior to committing yourself to any purchase will hopefully help reduce any chance of something going wrong.

Australian Government

• National and ACT Government Consumer and Complaints
From 1 January 2011, Australia will have a single, national consumer law the
Australian Consumer Law (ACL) Website: www.consumerlaw.gov.au

The ACL will replace the many state and territory consumer laws with a single national set of consumer rights and business rules. It is a cooperative reform of the Australian Government and the States and Territories, through the Ministerial Council on Consumer Affairs (MCCA).

The ACL will deliver a range of benefits, for example, bringing in a simpler set of statutory consumer guarantees that businesses must honour when selling goods and services. This means that both traders and consumers can have greater clarity about their rights regarding faulty products or sub-standard services and how best to protect those rights.

Consumers’ Federation
• The Consumers' Federation of Australia (CFA) is the national peak body for consumer groups in Australia. We have over 100 members including legal centres, health rights groups, local consumer organisations and public interest bodies. CFA’s role is to put the view of its member organisations to government and industry and advocate on behalf of consumers.
