Before setting out on bushwalks or other recreational activities, leave full details of your intended route and the time you expect to return with a relative or other responsible person. In some places you can leave details of your route at the place where you are staying or the visitor / information centre of the area you are visiting.

In many instances the state/territory parks have a registration scheme ie the Parks & Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory have a 'Overnight Walkers Registration Scheme' for those Walkers planning extended and overnight walks, such as the Larapinta Trail.

Carry extra food and water in case of unexpected delays.

Some of the essential items which should be included in your pack are: first aid kit, and matches.

In some areas and at various times of the year, you can expect dramatic weather changes. There can also be dramatic temperature changes such as between midday and night times. Depending on the time of year, and for expected weather changes, other essential items should include a space blanket, a parka and a woollen pullover, for the colder periods, and during summer, a hat.

If you are setting out from the main scenic viewing areas and tourist spots, carry a detailed map. These can be obtained from most camping stores, tourist centres and some National Parks and Wildlife Offices.

Your safety is important, so be aware and be prepared.
