The AAA Tourism STARS^TM rating is an accommodation classification schemes promoted, maintained and owned by AAA Tourism. No one except AAA Tourism, on behalf of Australia's Auto Clubs, is permitted to certify a STAR Rating to temporary accommodation properties (as specified in the registration) in Australia.

This independent assessment and rating covers a range of tourist accommodation properties in Australia. Properties are awarded a rating between one and five stars based primarily on facilities, amenities, maintenance and cleanliness. Properties are assessed on a regular basis (approximately every 14 - 15 months). The rating definition of STARS^TM vary depending on the accommodation category:

• Hotel, Motel, Apartment Hotel - these include licensed hotels, hotels/motels, limited licence hotels
• Bed and Breakfast (self catering and traditional), Guest House - include private hotels
• Self Catering - include holiday units, holiday flats, apartments, cottages, cabins, log cabins
• Tourist / Caravan Park
• Park Accommodation - include park cabins and cabins
• Backpacker hostel

A STAR is allocated on the basis of achieving a specified point score, with  half STAR allocation indicating the establishment offers similar standards to the appropriate full STAR rating, but offering more comfort by providing additional features and items.
