Welcome to accommodation Terara, New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Located
just to the east of Nowra, on the south bank of the Shoalhaven River, Terara
history is closely woven with Prosper de Mestre and Mary Ann de Mestre n้e Black
and family. Although Prosper de Mestre died in 1844, the family were
instrumental in the development and growth of Terara, as they added three
wharves, a church and established a steam-driven flour mill in 1856. Yet despite
the importance of Terara being at that time larger and more important than
nearby Nowra, when the Shoalhaven River flooded in 1870, the settlement shifted
to Nowra, which was only 3 km to the west.1
