During the latter part of the nineteenth century, during the Crimean
War of 1854-56, fears of a Russian invasion caused the government at
that time to commission a fortified military establishment on Bare
Island. When this didnt occur, it was turned into a war veterans
home. It is connected to the headland by a wooden bridge and still
has its cannon and a soldiers barracks.
Access to the island is from the park in La Perouse, where you can visit the
historic military fort and tunnels by guided tour only. For tour
information and bookings ring the
Sydney Harbour National Park Information Centre.
