Coonabarabran is known as the
‘Astronomy Capital of Australia’ and the ‘Gateway to the Warrumbungles’, a
mountain range which arcs around to the west, north and east of
Coonabarabran. Much of it is part of the popular Warrumbungle National
Park. A quiet and attractive country town on the Castlereagh River,
Coonabarabran's has an internationally research telescope, the
Siding Springs Observatory, which is a
popular tourist attraction.
