Diprotodon
(meaning two-front-teeth)
• The largest known marsupial, roamed Australia during
the last one to two million years ago, becoming extinct as recently as only
20,000 years ago. A specimen was recently discovered consisting of a skull and
most of the skeleton, excavated at Tambar Springs, near Coonabarabran. In
September 1979, Louise Friis of Tambar Springs, northern NSW, discovered a large
fossilized skull in the banks of Cox's Creek. Museum palaeontologists Dr A.
Ritchie and Mr R. Jones carried out an emergency dig to recover the skull and
returned later with a team of helpers to excavate the rest of the skeleton
buried deeper in the creek bank. From the charcoal fragments recovered near the
diprotodon skeleton, scientists in the University of Sydney's Radiocarbon
Laboratory have estimated that this particular animal lived and died at least
33,500 years ago.
