Dungog was
originally settled as a military outpost during 1834 to protect the local
settlers from bushrangers who terrorised the local population at this time.
The bushrangers were soon removed however the township remained with news of the
magnificent red cedar timbers to be found in the area bringing in new settlers
to harvest this natural resource. Local timber is still logged from the region
and sent to Sydney and
Newcastle. Many of the beautiful timbers to be
found inside the Sydney Opera House were in fact sourced from the Dungog area.
The town has an increasing focus on tourism, other industries include
dairying and of course logging. Being close to the
Barrington Tops National Park it is the
perfect staging point for bushwalkers and day trippers going into the park.
