Evans Head - Cities, Towns and Localities

Located on the east coast just south of Ballina, is the coastal town of Evans Head. Set amid picturesque headlands and surfing beaches, and surrounded by national parks, Evans Head is a popular holiday destination.

There are magnificent views from Razorback Lookout, and shallow, sandy beaches along the Evans River estuary, great for families with children. The main beach (north of the breakwater) is patrolled during the holiday seasons and weekends by lifesavers.

The swell that sweeps around ‘Goanna Headland’ is popular with the serious board rider, whilst this is also a place of great significance to the Bundjalung Nationa (represented by 13 tribes), who have been here for many thousands of years.

‘Goanna Headland’ is believed to be the body of the mythological ‘Dirawong’, a goanna, the benevolent protector that taught the Aboriginal the laws by which they should live.

Evans Head is popular for fishing, both in the estuaries and along the coast, and is also home to a commercial fishing fleet. Historically, it was home to the first commercial prawning port in Australia.

Razorback Lookout
• Ocean Drive Loop
• On a clear day from Razorback Lookout you can see Cape Byron Lighthouse to the north, as well as Broadwater National Park stretching back from the coastline. To the south is Bundjalung National Park. It provides a great vantage point for whale watching during annual whale migration. There is also views over ‘Goanna Headland’, with signage explaining the significance to the Bundjalung Nation who were the original indigenous people of the region.

The Evans Head river is a tidal river and holds many fish species such as bream, flat head, blackfish, whiting and plenty of other species that are just great fun to catch, especially for the kids.
