Just 99 km north of Sydney and one of the most popular holiday destinations
of the Central Coast, The Entrance includes Bateau Bay, Long Jetty, Shelly
Beach, Toowoon Bay, Tuggerah Lake and Wyrrabalong National Park. As well as
being a popular holiday resort, it is popular as a retirement region, offering
waterways, lake, surf beaches and foreshore parklands. The Entrance is where
the ocean enters Tuggerah Lake, as was known by a number of names over the
years, including Toowoon Bay, Tuggerah Beach and Karagi (the Aboriginal name for
the channel). It became known as The Entrance after the post office that opened
under that name in 1911. The area is a magnet for the avid fishermen, with
long stretches of surf beach on one side and the lake on the other. It is also
home to the Memorial Sailing Club, who sponsors the ‘Cock of the Lake’ race from
Long Jetty to Toukley and back, held annually at the end of April.
