Glen Innes
is located in rolling countryside on the Northern Tablelands. At about 1,062
metres above sea-level, the town and region offers plenty for the visitor with
distinctive seasons that has seen occasional snow. Steeped
in history, the town of Glen Innes and the Severn Shire is known as Celtic
Country, site of the unique Australian Standing Stones and venue of the
Australian
Celtic Festival.
Also on display at the Cooramah Aboriginal Cultural Centre is the history and
culture of the Aboriginal people.

Glen Innes Visitor Information Centre
Monument to the nation's Celtic pioneers, set in Centennial
Park, east of Glen Innes, just off the Gwydir Highway. The
Australian Standing Stones is an array of megalithic granite stones,
3.7 m above the ground level and weighing an average of 17 tonnes. Drawing
visitors from around the world, it is the centre of the annual
Australian Celtic Festival.

Glen Innes and Severn Shire region is the traditional tribal
lands of the Ngoorabul Aboriginal people. The centre is the home of the Cooramah
Aboriginal Art Gallery and Keeping Place, where local indigenous artworks and
artefacts are on display for public viewing. There is also a Koori Cuisine
Restaurant providing a range of freshly cooked Australian meals and snacks and
where the more adventurous can try bush tucker.

Mining Museum
Discover the mining history of the region, and housing the Curnow
mineral collection.

Fish includes murray cod, redfin, yellowbelly, silver perch,
catfish.

Fossicking
Glen Innes Celtic Country has
the worlds richest mineral diversity belt, and is famous for the deep rich,
royal blue sapphires, providing one of the regions most popular activities for
visitors and locals. Popular localities for fossicking include Glencoe, Dwyers,
Kookabookra, Wellingrove Reserve and Torrington State Conservation Area. Other

A fine folk museum exhibiting the heroism of pioneers and local
history. One of the largest folk museums in Australia, there are 24 rooms,
Craft, Historical Books and Etchings and an extensive archival research centre.
The name comes from the Beardies, two stockmen Chandler and Duval from
Tilbuster Station, north of Armidale, the first known white men in the district
in the early 1800s. For a consideration, the would direct new settlers to the best land
in the area. The building housing the museum, built in 1875, was the first Glen
Innes Hospital.

The largest annual mineral and gem show in New South Wales. This annual event is run by a voluntary community committee
with the aim of fostering all facets of the lapidary hobby. Everything connected
with the lapidary hobby can be seen and brought here from fossils, minerals,
uncut and cut gems, jewellery, findings, machinery, grinders, sanders, tumblers,
grits, polishes and books etc.
