Grenfell - Cities, Towns and Localities |
|
Nestled in a picturesque valley at the foot of the Weddin Mountains and
positioned between two national parks, is the historic town of Grenfell. Steeped
in history, the town was once known as Emu Creek, and renamed on 1st January,
1867 after John Granville Grenfell, whose was the Gold Commissioner at Forbes,
and was killed in 1866 when bushrangers attacked the stagecoach he was
travelling in. With the discovery of gold in Grenfell in 1866, the town
prospered. Between 1867-1871 the Grenfell gold fields were the richest gold
mining fields in NSW. The wealth generated saw growth and many new buildings in
the town, many of which can still be seen today. Most of
these historic buildings are concentrated in Main Street and George Street.

|
Grenfell is also the birthplace of Henry Lawson, and was the haunt of the notorious
bushranger, Ben Hall. Visitors to Grenfell can visit the Ben Halls Cave in the
Weddin Mountains National Park.

Conimbla National Park
Surrounded by farmland, Conimbla
National Park rises nearly 500 m above the plain, with Yambira Mountain, the
forested range, creek lines, rock ledges, small gorges and waterfalls provide a
bush haven for the flora and fauna and a recreational delight for visitors. Yambira
Mountain is the highest peak in the district. One of the spectacular section is Cherry Creek which lies in a small gorge
headed by a waterfall.
Spring is popular time with the wildflowers in bloom, the park has a number of
tracks, with the Iron Bark Walking Track (6 km) offering an easy grade walk,
whilst the Wallaby Walking Track (4 km) is medium to difficult. There are picnic
tables, wood barbecues and toilets at Wallaby Picnic Area. There are also picnic
tables at Ironbark car park. Both of these are on Barryrenie Road. There is no
car based camping, however you can hike and camp. Check the national parks
website for details.

Weddin Mountains National Park
The Wedding Mountains are a
crescent shaped range stretching some 19 km long rising more than 400 metres
above the surrounding plains. On a clear day the mountain is seen rising above
the landscape from over 50 km away, and the scenic drive as you approach the
park is a visual treat. Covering some 8,361 hectares,
The Wedding Mountains range is broken mid-way along
its length by the Weddin Gap. Clifflines and escarpments dominate the northern
and eastern side of the range, while the gentler slopes to the south and west
are dissected by many steep gullies.
