Gundagai - Cities, Towns and Localities

‘Dog on the Tucker Box’

A town hailed in verse around the world by the likes of Banjo Paterson (The Road to Gundagai). Jack O'Hagan after hearing this poem penned the song "Along the Road to Gundagai" which became an international hit and the opening tune to the hit show "Dad & Dave". The town has been described and written about by famous writers and poets all over the world many of whom have never even been to Gundagai.

Many of the streets in the town pay homage to literary greats such as Homer, Virgil, Ovid, Sheridan, Pope, Byron and Punch.

Sited at the foot of Mt Parnassus 390km south west of Sydney on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River this small town has cemented its position into Australian Folklore with the story telling of the "The Dog on the Tuckerbox" a ditty first published in the Gundagai Times. It became so popular that in 1932 a bronze sculpture of the dog on the tuckerbox was crafted by Frank Rusconi and unveiled by the then Prime Minister Joe Lyons.

Today the town continues on much as it always has. The area is rich in Bushranging history, museums and story telling. The main industries in the area are still sheep and cattle, wheat, maize and other grains are becoming popular.

Check out some of the listed travel guide attractions and visit the local tourist centre for additional information.
