Located on Sydney's upper north shore, approximately 25 km north-west of the
Sydney CBD, Hornsby is within the Hornsby Shire local government area. A
predominantly rural and residential area, Hornsby Shire encompasses an area of
510 square kilometres, of which approximately two thirds is national park and
reserves. The shire is home to many suburbs, villages, islands and river
communities. Hornsby is the major centre, followed by Epping and Pennant Hills.
Hornsby Shire is bounded by Gosford City and the Hawkesbury
River in the north and north-east, Cowan Creek in the east, the Ku-ring-gai
Council area, the City of Ryde and Parramatta City in the south and The Hills
Shire in the west.
