A predominantly rural and residential area, Hornsby Shire encompasses an area of 510 square kilometres, of which approximately two thirds is national park and reserves. The shire is home to many suburbs, villages, islands and river communities. Hornsby is the major centre, followed by Epping and Pennant Hills.

Hornsby Shire is bounded by Gosford City and the Hawkesbury River in the north and north-east, Cowan Creek in the east, the Ku-ring-gai Council area, the City of Ryde and Parramatta City in the south and The Hills Shire in the west.
 

Hornsby gets its name from the convict turned Police Constable Samuel Henry Horne, who took part in the apprehension of the bushrangers Dalton and MacNamara, on 22 June, 1830. In return he was granted land which he named ‘Hornsby Place’.
