Located in the Hunter Region, Monkerai in
the Monkerai Valley is a beautiful rural area between the towns of Stroud and
Gloucester. The road through the valley provides the main road link between
Dungog and
Gloucester, taking you
over the historic Monkerai Bridge. Spanning the Kuruah River and opened in 1877,
this bridge is a magnificent example of a timber truss bridge, of which there
are very few examples left. Monkerai is surrounded by natural beauty, ideally
located to a number of state forest, national parks and reserves, all less than
100 km from Monkerai. Monkerai also has its own park, the Monkerai Nature
Reserve, created in January 1999 and covering some 865 hectares.
