Lord Howe Island Group - Cities, Towns and Localities

Mutton Bird - Lord Howe Island

One of just four island groups to be awarded the World Heritage Listing (1982) and surrounded by Marine Parks there is plenty to see and do.

Check out the listed attractions. Another great way is to experience the area is to book in with one of the tour operators.

Lord Howe Island Attractions

Comets Hole
• Has a semi circular reef wall dropping to 8 metres and is a haven for Stingrays, Silver Trevally, Painted Morwong, Drummer, Bluefish and Catfish. There is a fresh water spring that emerges under the sandy bottom.
Erscotts Hole
• Located inside the reef edge on the south-west side of Rabbit Island and is best visited at low tide when the surrounding reef is exposed; the reef then stops any wave action inside the hole, resulting in clear, calm water. It's overall depth is less than 5 metres.
Neds Beach
• The most popular and accessible area on the east side of the island. The beach is surrounded by Kentia and Banyan forests. The Islanders and visitors have been hand feeding fish off the beach for years, resulting in a huge population of tame mullet, Silver drummer, wrasses and trevally, which swim right at the water’s edge.
North Bay
• A great picnic and BBQ location, where you can also see the great variety of fish.
Old Settlement Beach
• Located at at the northern end of the lagoon, is a place of tranquillity. You can relax and enjoy the sun whilst searching for the large Green Turtles or enjoy a walk in the forests.
Scuba Diving
• Separated from the mainland by over 600 km of deep ocean, the waters surrounding Lord Howe Island contain an mix of tropical and temperate marine species. This unique marine environment is breathtaking to view. Some dive sites include: Gower's Pinnacle, Rupert's Reef, and Malabar/Landslide.
Snorkelling
• There are a great variety of fish, both tropical and temperate with the total recorded species, at last count up to 490. Many of these are visible in the shallow waters just off the beaches. This means that you can snorkel within about 2 metres of water and within 50 metres of the shore. On the Lagoon side of the island, there are protected dives at Sylphs Hole, the Far Rocks and North Bay.
Walking Trails
• There are many walking trails including Transit Hill, Clear Place, Stevens Reserve, Max Nicholls Track, Mount Eliza, Old Gulch, Malabar and Kim's Lookout, Coastal Track to Rocky Run and Boat Harbour, Goat House, Intermediate Hill, Little Island and Mount Gower. Details available from the Visitor's Centre.
