Muswellbrook Attractions

The Blue Heeler
• Dartbrook, located some 12 km north of Muswellbrook is home of the Australian Cattle Dog, ‘the Blue Heeler’. In the early 1840’s, Thomas Hall of ‘Dartbrook’ saw the need for a special type of dog to assist farmers and landowners with the management of their stock. In particular, cattle on the huge pastoral holdings in the Upper Hunter region were allowed to roam free on the large unfenced stations, being mustered once or twice in a year.

Thomas Hall established the original line of ‘Heeler’ by crossing the native dingo with the Northumberland Blue Merle Drover’s dog. His aim being to produce a dog that could withstand the heat, long treks, was a quiet worker and able to effectively assist in the roundup of the wild cattle.

Today, the Australian Cattle Dog is now a registered breed, taking top honours in many international competitions and loved not only as a hard and intelligent working dog, but also a loyal and gentle ‘mate’.
