Narooma - Cities, Towns and Localities |
|

Lovely
resort town sited abreast the Wagonga inlet 350 km south of
Sydney. Ideal for families getting away to do that spot of
game fishing, feast on the fat local oysters and generally
take it steady for a while. The area was originally inhabited by
the Wandandian Aborigines, who were made to give way to the new settlers who
wanted more land for their cattle runs in the 1840's. The area's main industries
these days are oysters, fishing, big game fishing tours and tourism.

Montague
Island lies just
of the coast from Narooma declared a wildlife sanctuary in
1953, the island is home to many seals and fairy penguins,
guided tours of the island and its lighthouse are available
from Narooma. Narooma is home to one of the
more unusual movie houses in Australia the Narooma Kinema.
The movies are displayed on the screen using a Kinematograph
instead of a projector. The technology never really took off
however this wonderful old art deco theatre manages to
survive intact to this day. Check out our listing of Narooma
accommodation. As well as our listed travel guide info, for more
attractions, tours and other information contact the local tourism visitor
centre. |

Montague Island
• Montague Island was originally a fertile hunting ground for the
local Aboriginal people and the island contains a number of
Aboriginal sites. With the appearance of white settlement, huge
numbers of seals were commercially harvested during the early part
of this century.

Narooma
Lighthouse Museum and Visitor Centre
• Address above
• The light source for
the Montague Island Lighthouse beacon was converted from oil to kerosene, and
then to electricity in 1969. The mechanism was completely removed in 1986, and
replaced by a battery of solar powered quartz halogen lamps. The original light
mechanism packed, prism by prism in individual cases surrounded by expanding
foam sprayed in to protect the contents. It was then stored in Sydney pending a
decision on its final destination. In October, 1986, the Narooma Apex Club
wrote to the Department of Transport and Communications asking that the original
light be returned to Narooma to be placed on permanent display in the town. This
was agreed to, provided the light could be housed in a acceptable manner. In
consultation with Eurobodalla Shire Council, an extension was built and
accessible thorough the Narooma Visitors' Centre to house the light.
Drop in and visit the centre, where there is a collection of items on
display, as well as historical information about the lighthouse.
