Narrabri Shire - Cities, Towns and Localities

Mt Kaputar - Narrabri Shire

Narrabri Shire includes the towns of Narrabri, Wee Waa and Boggabri. Also Baan Baa, Bellata, Edgeroi, Gwabegar and Pilliga.
 

There are many great reasons to visit the Narrabri Shire, located in the ‘Big Sky Country’, with Mount Kaputar National Park, a must visit with its magnificent views, bush walks, native flora and fauna, and camping facilities.

Yarrie Lake is a circular lake about 1.5 km across and only 10 km south-west from the popular CSIRO Australia Telescope. Other attractions include the Pilliga Nature Reserve and Keepit Dam, whilst the Nandewar Range to the east include some popular gem and rock fossicking areas.

Narrabri Shire Attractions

Boggabri
• A town with some historical interest including George Clark (the barber), Gin's Leap, and Barber's Pinnacle.

CSIRO Australia Telescope
• 21 km West of Narrabri. Has five moveable dishes, 22 m across that rest on 3 km of rail track, and a sixth placed 3 km further west. The dishes can operate individually, or as one telescope spanning 6 km. When linked with the 64 m telescope at Parkes, the observing span is 320 km. There is a visitors centre open for public viewing.
Fossicking for Gemstones
• At Bellata, 45 km North of Narrabri, is found agate, petrified and opalised wood.
Mt Kaputar National Park
• 56 km East of Narrabri. Visit the Mt Kaputar Summit, 1510 m above sea level with views of one tenth of NSW.
Narrabri
• Situated 560 km North West of Sydney.
Pilliga Scrub
• Starting 15 km South of Narrabri and stretching almost to Coonabarabran, is 400,000 ha of cypress pine, iron bark and many other species of eucalypts. Pick up the brochure 'Bird Routes of the Pilliga' at the visitor centre.
Sawn Rocks
• 36 km North East of Narrabri, a 40 m high basalt formation. One of the best examples of "organ piping" or columnar jointing in Australia.
Waa Gorge
• 57 km North of Narrabri. At the base of the 100 m high wall, many rainforest plants cling to the rocky banks and bed of the creek.
Wee Waa
• Located 40 km West of Narrabri, the name comes from the Aboriginal word meaning "Fire for Roasting". Birth place of Australia's modern cotton industry. Cotton tours are available during certain times of the year (April-July).
Yarrie Lake
• 26 km west of Narrabri, on the edge of the Pilliga Scrub, is this circle expanse of water, 3 km in diameter. A great place for bird watching. Camping is available.
