Located at the mouth of the Hunter River, the city was founded on the hard
labour of convicts. With the discovery of coal, it led Newcastle to becoming a
shipping and commercial centre, with iron and steel mills adding to the
importance of city. Today, the second oldest city in Austraia, Newcastle and
region offers the visitor a number of attractions and things to do, as well as
its close proximity to the Hunter Valley and Port Stephens.
