Orange - Cities, Towns and Localities
Orange is situated on the western side of the Great Dividing Range, 261 km west of Sydney and 863 m above sea level. Located in the Central West, it is a rural centre that lies in the heart of New South Wales, on fertile soils that resulted from the lava flows, of the now extinct volcano of Mount Canobolas.

Once occupied by the Wiradjuri Aborigines prior to European settlement, it is also the birthplace and home of the poet Banjo Paterson. The town was named after the Prince of Orange by Major Mitchell who had fought with the Prince of Orange in the Peninsular War in Spain. The Duke of Wellington was also honoured with the naming of the nearby town of that name.

Orchard in OrangeThere is much to see and do in the region, such as the fantastic 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside from Mount Canobolas. As well as Mount Canobolas and Lake Canobolas, attractions include the Orange City Heritage Trail that takes in the Holy Trinity Church of Orange (1879) and Duntryleague (1876). Also of interest are regional galleries, gardens and parks (including the Orange Botanical Gardens), the many wineries and Ophir Recreation Reserve, where Australia’s first payable gold was discovered in 1851.
