Palm Beach - Cities, Towns and Localities |
|
Located at the most northern extremity of Sydney and it's northern beaches
region is Palm Beach, favoured by artisans, millionaires and those in the film
industry, with some using it as an escape home from their main
city residence. The location for Summer Bay from the TV series Home and Away, it
is Sydney's most northern surf beach, also a favourite spot
to visit for backpackers and others who live near the area. The Palm Beach peninsula
flattens into a long, sandy tombolo, climbing to the dramatic Barrenjoey Head
land,
with the Barrenjoey lighthouse situated on top dominating the area. The Pacific Ocean
lies on the eastern side of the
peninsula and 11 km of inland waterways called the Pittwater on the west, along
with the
Kur-ring-gai
Chase National Park, it is a stunningly picturesque
location.

If you get there early, you can catch the morning sun as it glows on
the sandstone cliffs of the Barrenjoey Head. Anglers can be seen trying their
luck, as well as surfers, canoeists and kayakers. A great place for joggers and
those just taking a leisurely stroll with their dogs. Just 40 km from the CBD,
Palm Beach is approximately 50 minutes by bus from Sydney. For additional accommodation, attraction, tours and other information visit the local tourist centre.

Barrenjoey Lighthouse and
Keepers Cottage Barrenjoey Head
Ph: 02 9247 5033 (Sydney
Harbour National Park Information Centre)
Built of Hawkesbury sandstone, it was
the third light on the headland, completed in 1881. In 1843 a customs station
was established, marking the entrance to Broken Bay and the Pittwater which were
considered to be the back entrance of Sydney for smugglers. The first report of
a light on the Headland was in 1855, when a fire was raised in a basket to
assist the mariners during stormy weather, as the bay and Pittwater inlet were
safe haven during storms for vessels travelling from Newcastle to Sydney,
carrying their cargo of coal.In 1868, the Stewart Towers were built at either
end of the Headland. These two wooden lighthouses guided ships in. The need for
a permanent lighthouse lead to the construction of the existing Barrenjoey
Lighthouse. It is managed by the NSW Parks and Wildlife.
