‘The Ute capital Of The World’

A green oasis located on the Edward River on the edge of the the Riverine Plain, Deniliquin or ‘Deni’ as it is known locally, is in the heart of the Riverina sheep station country part of Outback New South Wales. As well as wool, Deniliquin main agricultural produce include rice and timber.

Deniliquin lies within the traditional lands of the Wamba Wamba and Perrapa Perrapa Nations.

With a number of attractions include being on the fringe of the world’s largest Redgum forest, visitors can enjoy the number of well developed network of forest trails, kayaking, biking, swimming, water-skiing, fishing, and camping.

Peppin Heritage Centre
The Peppin Heritage Centre is an ideal starting point for visitors to Deniliquin. Incorporating the visitor information centre, the building was Deniliquin's first public school and has now been transformed into a regional museum that houses permanent exhibitions, as well as hosting a number of travelling exhibitions.

One of the stories in the museum is about the Peppin family, after whom the museum is dedicated. In 1858 the English sheep breeders, George Hall Peppin and his two sons, took up Wanganella run. The family developed a breed of Merino sheep that was more suited for the Australian conditions. The new breed of sheep produced greater quantity and quality of wool. Today the Wanganella bloodline forms the foundation of more than 90% of the nation's flock.

• Opening hours are 10 am to 12 pm Tuesdays and Saturdays. Other times by arrangement.
• Housed in a former police inspector's residence, built 1887, the Society's museum section contains displays of photographs (over 12,000 held by the Society); local newspapers dating back to 1859; books by local authors and others on the history of Deniliquin and district; a War Veterans room, and items of memorabilia and artefacts from early times.
