Shoal Bay - Cities, Towns and Localities
Located on the southern shore of Port Stephens, overlooking the bay of the same name, Shoal Bay is the most eastern suburb in the Port Stephens LGA and like the whole region, is a popular tourist destination.

With Tomaree National Park extending from Fishermans Bay to Shoal Bay, there are plenty of nature activities. There are of course beach and aquatic activities with tour operators available at Nelson Bay, which is only a short walk away.

Shoal Bay Attractions

Tomaree National Park
• The national park is located on the shores of the Tasman Sea, extending north from Fishermans Bay to Shoal Bay, and passing through Boat Harbour, One Mile, Nelson Bay and Fingal Bay.

The national park conserves coastal bushland, sand dunes, heathland, forest areas and over 20 km of rocky coastline and beaches. With a wealth of bird life, and other flora and fauna, the national park provides some great bush walking activities and include a lookout at Tomaree Headland at Shoal Bay.

The walk to the top of Tomaree Head and around historic World War II gun emplacements provides panoramic views over Port Stephens, up and down the coast, and out to Boondalbah, Cabbage Tree and Broughton islands, all of which are nature reserves. As well as bush walking there are opportunities for swimming, snorkelling, surfing, fishing and picnicking. Visitor facilities include picnic and BBQ areas, as well as toilets.

Other attractions include the sand spit or ‘tombolo’ out to Point Stephens, a spectacular feature of the park. The spit is sometimes exposed during low tides, making it possible to walk out to Point Stephens and inspect the lighthouse and ruins of the lighthouse keeper’s cottage complex, built in 1862.
