Situated in the southern highlands and part of
the
Alpine Way travel route for those visiting the snow, Cooma is the
commercial and social hub of the Monaro Plains and
Snowy Mountains
region. The country town of Cooma is at the crossroad for many travellers,
located within an hour of the mountains,
Canberra and the coast. Its location means that you will get four distinct seasons
from the warm to hot summer days and cool nights, clear autumn skies
both day and night, frosty winter mornings with the occasional snow
falls, and the colourful floral displays of spring.
The Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority was established in
1949, with workers from 27 nations working on the project, then the
largest civil/electrical project undertaken in Australia. Today it
remains the headquarters of the Snowy Mountains Scheme.
