Cooma - Cities, Towns and Localities
Situated in the southern highlands and part of the Alpine Way travel route for those visiting the snow, Cooma is the commercial and social hub of the Monaro Plains and Snowy Mountains region. The country town of Cooma is at the crossroad for many travellers, located within an hour of the ‘mountains’, Canberra and the coast.

It’s location means that you will get four distinct seasons from the warm to hot summer days and cool nights, clear autumn skies both day and night, frosty winter mornings with the occasional snow falls, and the colourful floral displays of spring.

The Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority was established in 1949, with workers from 27 nations working on the project, then the largest civil/electrical project undertaken in Australia. Today it remains the headquarters of the Snowy Mountains Scheme.

With it's varied history, Cooma has many interesting historic and cultural attractions. To explore Cooma’s heritage you can take the Lambie Town Walk, which begins in Centennial Park and takes in 10 km of township and scenic bushland.

The Heritage Rail Motor departs Cooma Railway Station to Bunyan and Chakola.

Items of historic interest include the Lord Raglan Inn, built during the Kiandra Gold Rush to accommodate travellers to the gold fields. The Mosaic Time Walk in Centennial Park depicts life in the Snowy Mountains from its origins through to the present time.

Other attractions include the International Avenue of Flags located in Centennial Park. The flags of the nations represent the men and women who worked on the Snowy Mountains Scheme. Visit the Aviation Pioneers Memorial, the Corey Memorial, the Old Gaol Museum and see a statue of the famous ‘Man from Snowy River’ as immortalised by Banjo Paterson.
