Tumut - Cities, Towns and Localities
Tumut once marked the boundary of three separate Aboriginal tribes. During summer the tribes would come together and journey to the high country to feast on bogong moths. It was during the late 1820’s that white settlers came down the Murrumbidgee River and by 1829, the first pioneers were settled on the Tumut River. Tumut is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘quiet resting place by the river’.

Snowy Mountains Countryside

The Tumut region, encompassing Adelong, Batlow and Talbingo, enjoys four distinct seasons and is a pleasure all year round. There are huge inland lakes, sparkling clean streams, green pastures to vast pine forests, mountains, the Snowy Mountains Scheme, and the beauty of the Kosciuszko National Park.

• The place where the cream of Australia’s stockmen, women and their horses gather annually. Whip cracking, horses shoeing, yarn spinning and the good old fashioned ‘cooo-ee’ were a part of life when Paterson met Riley. And at the dawn of a new millennium, these skills will be essential elements of The Man From Snowy River Bush Festival.
