Toukley - Cities, Towns and Localities |
|
Once a small fishing village, Toukley is located on the
Central Coast, some 107 km north of
Sydney
via the Newcastle Freeway. The Greater Toukley Area encompasses Tuggerah Lake,
the principal coastal lagoon that spans an 80 sq km lake system and includes
Lake Munmorah and Budgewoi Lake. Tuggerah Lake
and Budgewoi Lake are two interconnected lakes separated by two narrow strips of land that
extends out from the
eastern and western shores. This provide a narrow channel allowing for the interchange of water
between the two lakes. The gap is spanned by Wallarah Point Bridge connecting Toukley (on the
eastern side), with Gorokan (on the western side).

The lagoons are separated
from the Pacific Ocean by large sand peninsulas, but all share common access to
the ocean at The Entrance. The area provides for a number of aquatic activities
including canoeing, waterskiing, sailing, rowing, sailboarding, fishing and
prawning. As well as the lakes, Toukley region also includes Norah Head,
Noraville, Wyrrabalong National Park, Budgewoi and Munmorah State Recreation
Area. For additional information visit the information centre.

Canton Beach
• Located on the northern shore of
Tuggerah Lake and part of Toukley, Canton Beach is is one of Toukley's tourist attractions, offering
a superb venue for bushwalking, aquatic and wildlife activities. It is a
fishermen's paradise for bream, luderick, tailor, whiting, flathead and prawns
at certain times of the year. Boat hire facilities are available, as well as
there being a boat ramp.
Other activities include wind surfing, sail boarding, sailing, rowing, catamaran
and water skiing. There is even camel racing at certain times of the year. The
lake is considered a safe spot for children to swim in, offering plenty of
camping and caravan areas with picnic, BBQ and playground facilities.
Wildlife in the area include numerous species of birds including the ever
popular lorikeets, galahs, rosellas and duck and possums can be seen at dusk.
The beach owes its name to the fact that Chinese fishermen used it as a base of
operations in the early to mid 19th century, catching and curing fish, which
would be sent off to Queensland, the goldfields and back home to China.
