Located on the far south coast of New South Wales, is the
tranquil setting of Wonboyn Lake, the gateway to Nadgee Wilderness
Area. Surrounded by
forest and national parks, this is an oasis for the variety of
bird and other wildlife. There are tracks and walking trails that
lead to magnificent wilderness rivers and beaches. This protected
habitat is the home to many varieties of birds and native animals.
There are over 100 recorded species of birds. Part of a saltwater
estuary, Wonboyn Lake and its
tidal river system winds its way, traversing over 10 km, before
running through a narrow channel into the sea at Disaster Bay. The
lake is also known as “the fisherman’s paradise”, where they call
the flathead ‘spades’ (an indication of size). Fish include
flathead, bream, tailor, jewfish, trevally, luderick, whiting,
salmon, tailor, and bream.
