• Rotary Club of Alice Springs
•
Usually held on the first Monday in May
•
Annual event that first began in 1959 to celebrate the ties between Alice
Springs and the cattle industry. Cattlemen would cut off the hairy end of the
animal’s tail after they were mustered to give them an overall animal count.
Today the event is part of the history of the Alice, and each year the
organisers of the parade, the Rotary Club of Alice Springs, promote a theme for
the parade (2004 was sport, 2005 was water and 2006 was Aussie Heroes). The
parade passes through the town centre and ends with a family
entertainment/concert. To view some images

Alice Springs Beanie
Festival
• Web: www.beaniefest.org
• June (over 4 days)
• A community- based event that began in 1997 with a ‘beanie party’, organised by
Adi Dunlop. In the early years, the festival was run by a group of friends on a
volunteer basis. The core group has slowly grown into a committed band of
beanie-ologists. We know our beanies! The festival was organised to sell beanies
crocheted by Aboriginal women in remote communities. It has grown into a fun
event where Aboriginal and non- Aboriginal artists share their culture and
exhibit together. The festival is unique because of the incredible amount of
community participation and our unique ties with local Aboriginal organisations.
The festival’s aims have always been to develop Aboriginal women’s textiles,
promote womens’ culture and the beanie as a regional art form, as well as
promote handmade textile arts.

thousands of spectators. ‘The Finke’ to locals and off road racers around the
world, is a unique outback race for bikes, cars and buggies, stretching some 235
km through desert country, from Alice Springs to Finke (Aputula Community).
The race follows sections of the Old Ghan Railway service track, adjacent to the
railway line, along a winding corrugated track that snakes its way through red
dirt, sand, desert oak, mulga and spinifex country. The length of this
spectacular route enables people to stake a position along the track, and even

Assa Abloy Henley on Todd Regatta
• Mobile: 0418 897 027 •

• Held 3rd Saturday of August - the next event is the 50th anniversary on Saturday 20th
August, 2011
• The world famous boat race is an
annual event held on the Todd River. All that is needed for this
madcap event, is a dry riverbed, plenty of bottomless boats, plenty of frivolity
and laughter, and the human kind
of ‘horse power’. Starting with the parade at 11 am up Todd Mall, with contestants showing
off their boats, the Henley-on-Todd provides a nautical madcap day of
entertainment, finishing with the traditional ‘Battle of the Boats’.
The only time the boat race may not run to schedule is if the Todd River is
flowing, as happened in 1993, when there was too much water in the Todd River
and the event had to be cancelled due to flooding! |
