Following is a list of suburbs in Alice Springs.
Known affectionately as the
Alice or just Alice, the town is named after a woman who has never been
there, the wife of the former Postmaster General of South Australia, Sir Charles
Todd, and after a spring that did not exists, when the telegraph station was
sited near what was thought to be a permanent waterhole.
With a population that fluctuates between 24,000 to nearly 30,000, depending
on local activities, events and seasons, Alice Springs is considered the heart
of Central Australia, attracting visitors from around the world.
It was in 2008 the
federal government has officially gazetted the name of 20 suburbs, all still
bearing the same postcode of 0870, in Alice Springs.
