Red-backed Kingfisher
(Todiramphus pyrrhopygia)

This medium-sized kingfisher has a blue-green back and tail. The rump has a distinctive chestnut colour and a broad black stripe  through the eyes, extend back to the nape. The under parts are white.

Seen perched up high, dropping to the ground to catch small reptiles and small mammals.

Found throughout the drier regions of semi-arid open woodlands, mulga and mallee scrublands, and spinifex country.
