Frilled Lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii)

Also commonly known as the Frilled-neck Lizard or Frilled Dragon, this distinctive reptile is one of the iconic wildlife promoted in Australia. The Frilled Neck Lizard gets its name from the large ruff of skin which lies folded back like a cape against its head, neck and shoulder when at rest.

This frill is supported by long spines of cartilage, and when the lizard is frightened, it gapes its mouth exposing a bright pink or yellow lining, and it also flares the frill out which is coloured with a bright display of orange and red scales and can measure up to 30 cm across. The frill may also aid in thermoregulation.
