From the initial concept of The Gathering Garden, by artist Julie
Squires, the painting by Arrernte / Walpiri artists and sisters, Marie Elena
Ellis and Roseanne Ellis, became the inspiration by which the physical layout of The Gathering Garden
was developed and constructed.
The painting was then interpreted by the leading authority and local horticulturalist, Geoff Miers,
from which he designed the desert native garden with species of plants, shrubs, trees
and locally quarried sandstone, river rubble and granite.
