Wildflowers of Central Australia

The arid centre is a vast region with a varied number of habitats, from the sandy desert areas, salt lakes, claypans, gorges, chasms, gaps, and seemingly dry riverbeds that weave across the landscape linking up permanent water holes.

Yet this arid region is home to a variety of plant life, from towering trees to a variety of smaller flowering plants such as the Upside-down Plant and the bright Orange Spade Flower. There are succulent plants such as the parakeelyas plants range from the Tiny Purslane through to the vivid floral coloured Broad-leaf Parakeelya. The fluffy family of flowering plants known commonly as the mulla mullas, range in colour, shape and size, and produce dramatic effects when there is a single plant display in a field of grass, or when there are thousands of them bending in the breeze before your eyes.

Whilst many plants appear to flower at the same time each year, many of the desert wildflowers have adapted to flowering after periods of rain.

To view our listing of some of the wildflowers you can view in Central Australia, check out some of the following sections:

Annual Yellowtop - Wildflowers of Central Australia.

Large Green Pussytail (Ptilotus macrocephalus) - Wild flowers of Central Australia.
