Blue Pincushion
Brunonia australisBrunoniaceae (of the Brunonia family), this tufted
perennial herb is striking with its cornflower-blue flower heads on a
usually leafless unbranched stalks measuring between 10-35 cm high. Leaves are
mainly basal and oblanceolate.
Its common
name of Blue Pincushion refers to the protruding pin-like styles sticking up
above the blue petals.
Found growing on sandplains and dunes, although widespread, is not very
common. The following images are from spectacular wildflower display in the
Alice Springs region, found in clusters and among other wildflowers such as the
longtails. |
