Gemtree is a popular destination not only for the locals, but for the fans of
fossicking. As the Gateway to the gem fields of Central Australia, you will join
fellow fossickers on tag-along tours in search of garnets and zircons. Gemtree
also offers the opportunity for some great bird watching, especially in the
early morning and late afternoon. Whilst here, make sure you take in some of
the unique flora in this arid landscape. The Bush Banana can sometimes be seen
twined up a shrub or tree. This woody vine can sometimes be difficult to see
amongst the leaves of the shrub and trees. With creamy flowers and thick narrow
leaves, the fruit is a pear-shaped pod, hence its other common name of Native
Pear. This plant is an important Indigenous food, with the sweet flowers and
young fruits being the most favoured parts of the plant. |
