Located in the vast and spectacular West MacDonnell Range and part of the
West MacDonnell National Park, Ormiston Gorge with a near-permanent waterhole,
showcases the spectacular geology and landforms of the region. When full, the
waterhole is estimated to be up to 14 metres deep at its southern end. The
gorge and pound offers a number of walks of different lengths by which visitors
can fully appreciate the beauty of the region, and maybe even catch a glimpse of
some of the wildlife that call this region home.
After heavy rain, the gorge and pound transforms, with Ormiston Creek
swelling with water and flowing through the pound to join up with the
Finke River, just before the
river crosses Namatjira Drive and into Glen Helen.
